Assistant Service Officer

Description:Position performs responsible Service Officer work as defined by the State & Federal Statues for Service Officers. Assists local veterans & dependents in filing the proper forms to receive the maximum benefit available. In the absence of the Veteran Service Office Director this employee is responsible for the operations of the office.

The employee is expected to keep abreast of current rights and benefits and any changes in existing legislation and policies effecting veterans and dependent benefits. Attend all schools, workshops and conference given by the State & Federal authorities. Maintain the proper credit hours to keep accreditations.
Duties:Interviews local veterans by phone or in person and advises & assists them in the proper steps to achieve those benefits

Investigates claims, gathers supporting documentary evidence and prepares claims for processing to the Veterans Administration on behalf of the client.

Meet Federal & State monthly guidelines for claim processing.

Complies & prepares monthly written reports indicating the number of veterans assisted, number of claims processed & the category of the claim as well as the volume of work accomplished.

Qualifications:Ability to complete training & testing for Service Officer accreditation as set forth in the Federal & State guidelines.

Ability to understand, interpret and apply technical rules, directives and regulations pertaining to the claims process.

Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and regulation pertaining to veteran services and benefits.

Knowledge of the various forms pertaining to veterans or dependent claims.

Knowledge of guidelines to keep accreditation.

Knowledge of community organizations, agencies, and facilities related to veteran’s affairs.

Knowledge and ability to operate a computer as related to Veteran’s Benefits & other County related work.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work independently & be flexible in a small office environment.
